Désert de Lompoul

The Lompoul Desert is an ochre dune landscape between Dakar and Saint-Louis, near the coast. Mining activity has changed parts of the landscape and access routes, so visits should be arranged with a local operator familiar with current conditions.

Things to see and do

  • Walk across the dunes with someone familiar with current access routes
  • Observe the rippled sand and Sahelian vegetation
  • Enjoy the early-morning or late-afternoon light
  • Learn from local residents about recent changes to the landscape

Good to know

Confirm the exact visit location, vehicle access and services actually available before departure. Bring water, sun protection and closed shoes: the sand can become very hot and thorny plants are present.
