Marché de Guet Ndar
Guet Ndar is Saint-Louis’s fishing neighbourhood on the Langue de Barbarie. Its streets and seafront reflect an active maritime community, with pirogues, fishing equipment and activity around landings. It is a residential and working area, not a staged attraction. The three photographs document Guet Ndar in 2008, 2014 and 2022; they do not promise that the area looks the same today.
Things to see and do
- Observe the pirogues from public areas without obstructing launches or landings
- Walk through the neighbourhood while respecting residents’ daily life
- Learn about fishing’s role in the history and economy of Saint-Louis
- Ask people for permission before taking their photograph
Good to know
If possible, visit with someone from the neighbourhood. Keep clear of working areas and boats; do not enter homes or workshops without an invitation. These are photographs of the neighbourhood from 2008 (Olivier Flambeau), 2014 (Alweaver2) and 2022 (Ibfal), licensed CC BY-SA 4.0; see each source file.
