Niokolo-Koba National Park
Niokolo-Koba National Park protects 913,000 hectares of savannah, gallery forest and wetlands crossed in part by the Gambia River. A UNESCO World Heritage property since 1981, it should be explored slowly with an authorised guide and a suitable vehicle; wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Things to see and do
- Follow authorised tracks with a guide who knows the park
- Observe the savannah, gallery forests and watering areas
- Look for birds, primates, antelope and other wildlife without approaching them
- Stop at accessible posts and viewpoints where conditions allow
Good to know
Before travelling, confirm opening dates, the entrance in use, track conditions, formalities and guide requirements with park authorities. Allow a full day and carry plenty of water, sun protection, binoculars and enough fuel. Never feed or chase wildlife.
