Kahone and the former Saloum kingdom

Kahone was a capital of the Saloum kingdom before Kaolack became a key administrative and trading centre. A visit offers a way to explore the region’s Serer history and living memory. Specific sites and local storytellers should be confirmed on the ground; this guide promises neither a guided tour nor entry to a monument. The two photographs show baobabs beside a road in Kahone (2022) and Fass Kahone Mosque (2020), rather than identified remains of the kingdom.

Things to see and do

  • Walk through Kahone’s public areas with respect for the present-day town
  • Explore accounts of the old Saloum kingdom through local sources
  • Respect places of memory and ask before taking photos
  • Plan your return and check local travel conditions

Good to know

Kahone is a living town, not an open-air museum. The photos show present-day places in Kahone and do not identify relics of the old kingdom. Do not enter private property. When viewing the mosque, stay in permitted areas, respect prayer times and ask before photographing.
