Walk along the Senegal River

Near Matam, the Senegal River shapes the landscape and riverside life. The postcard by François-Edmond Fortier shown here dates from the early 20th century: it depicts the banks near Matam, not their present condition. For a walk today, find a stable public access point and view the river from land. Water levels, erosion and floods can change access; neither a boat crossing nor swimming is guaranteed.

Things to see and do

  • Find a stable public access point before approaching the banks.
  • View the watercourse and vegetation from land.
  • Ask residents which access points are usable on the day.
  • Turn back if paths are flooded or damaged.

Good to know

Ask about floods and current access. Keep away from unstable banks; this guide does not offer swimming or a river crossing.
